Come and Celebrate Coach Mike McCoy's Retirement
On October 10th, during the Eastern Homecoming Football Game, we will honor the retirement of Coach Mike McCoy, one of the greatest in Eastern history.
An Eastern alum and standout athlete in both track and football, Coach McCoy went on to a Hall of Fame dual-sport career at Western Kentucky University before playing in the NFL.
Over the next 50 years, he built one of the most remarkable coaching legacies among Eastern Eagles. He served as both assistant and head football coach and had a Hall of Fame track and field coaching career—leading three state championship teams, producing dozens of All-State athletes, and coaching numerous individual and relay state champions. His hard work and success earned him induction into the Louisville Metro ADs Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Eastern Alumni Hall of Fame.
Coach McCoy was my mentor when I was a high school track athlete, and one of the great honors of my life has been coaching alongside him for nearly my entire career.
Eastern High School and our track family have been profoundly blessed by Coach McCoy’s leadership. I expect he would coach forever if his energy levels allowed him to continue to bring his trademark intensity.
Please join us on Friday, October 10th, at the Eastern HS Football Game to celebrate Coach Mike McCoy’s retirement. We will also recognize Coach Jim Holman, McCoy’s longtime partner in Eastern Track and Field, who retired after the 2025 track season. Coach Holman concluded his career at Male High School but will forever be an Eastern Eagle. Over more than 30 years at Eastern, he coached track, cross country, and basketball, and—alongside Coach McCoy—led the 1996, 1997, and 1998 girls’ track teams to state championships. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1998.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. as the Eagles take on Oldham County, with a special recognition of Coach McCoy and Coach Holman during the first quarter break.
